# Set up your iPhone

> Pair your iPhone with Sightline and confirm the connection.

Pair Sightline Companion on iPhone with Sightline on your computer and confirm their connection. Then choose a recording guide for your first observation.

## Before you start

Install Sightline on your computer and Sightline Companion on your iPhone before pairing. The computer needs **Pro or an active Pro trial**. For installation help and version requirements, see [Overview and requirements](/companion/overview#what-you-need). See [Licensing](/licensing) to activate Pro or start a trial.

Keep both devices beside you, with Bluetooth enabled. Open Sightline on your computer and Sightline Companion on iPhone. Allow Bluetooth access when asked.

Microphone access is optional. Companion may ask for it when you first open the app; you can decline and still score. If you want to record spoken notes, follow [Voice notes](/companion/voice-notes) to prepare the microphone and computer transcription model.

## Pair the phone

<Steps>
  <Step title="Find the phone" id="find-the-phone">
    **Computer:** open **Settings → Companion** and select **Pair a phone**.

    **iPhone:** keep Companion open. Its first pairing screen says **Pair with your computer**. Your computer shows **Looking for your phone…** while it searches.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Compare and confirm the codes" id="compare-and-confirm-the-codes">
    When a code appears on each device, compare the two codes. If they match, select **Pair** on the computer and **Pair** on iPhone. If they differ, select **Cancel** and start again with the intended devices.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Check the connection" id="check-the-connection">
    Wait for pairing to finish. **Waiting for your iPhone…**, **Waiting for your computer…**, and **Finishing pairing…** mean there is still a step in progress.

    Check that iPhone briefly shows **Paired**, then **Connected**. The computer should show **Phone connected** without a **Pairing incomplete** warning.
  </Step>
</Steps>

If the devices are already paired to each other, check these connection states and continue below. **Pair a different phone** replaces the current phone; it is not needed for this check.

## Ready to record

Pairing connects the devices. To prepare and start an observation, follow the guide for where you will record:

* [Record with your computer nearby](/companion/record-nearby) covers starting, scoring, and saving a live desktop observation with Companion input.
* [Record away from your computer](/companion/record-away) contains the complete practice walkthrough, from preparing one behavior with 30-second partial intervals to reviewing the returned record.

## If setup does not work

* **Phone not found or Bluetooth permission message:** follow [phone discovery help](/companion/troubleshooting#phone-not-found).
* **Pairing incomplete or a waiting screen:** follow [pairing help](/companion/troubleshooting#pairing-incomplete).
* **Out of sync:** follow [compatible-version help](/companion/troubleshooting#out-of-sync).

If iPhone holds an unfinished observation or one that has not reached the computer, keep that observation on the phone before changing pairing. Follow [Before forgetting or deleting](/companion/troubleshooting#before-forgetting-or-deleting).
