# Record with your computer nearby

> Connect iPhone, enter scores, and save the observation on your computer.

Use iPhone to enter scores while Sightline records on your computer. Keep the desktop recorder open and the devices connected. To observe without a connected computer, use [Record away from your computer](/companion/record-away).

## Connect and prepare

Companion requires Pro or an active Pro trial. [Pair and connect your iPhone](/companion/iphone-setup), then:

1. On your computer, open the student and select **Start Observation**.
2. Choose the method, behaviors, and timing. See [Observation setup](/observation-setup) for these controls.
3. Select **Begin** in the setup footer. The recorder opens, but the observation clock has not started.
4. On iPhone, check that the method and behaviors match the observation you prepared.

## Start

When you are ready to observe, select **Start** on the computer or **Begin** on iPhone. Check that the desktop timer advances before entering scores.

## Enter scores on iPhone

Use the section for your method. Review recorded scores and make corrections on the computer; a phone interval button acts on the current interval, not an earlier cell selected on the desktop.

### Interval recording

For **Partial** and **Whole Interval**, watch throughout the interval and tap behaviors as you observe them. You can tap at any time, whether **Pause to score each interval** is on or off.

* **Partial Interval:** tap a behavior when it happens. Leave it marked for the rest of the interval, even if it stops or happens again. When the interval is recorded, untouched behaviors count as not having happened.
* **Whole Interval:** tap a behavior if it is absent or does not meet its definition at any point. Leave that mark in place for the rest of the interval, even if the behavior resumes. When the interval is recorded, untouched behaviors count as having happened throughout.

With **Pause to score each interval** on, the observation clock stops when the interval ends. Review your marks, make any corrections, then select **Continue** to record them and start the next interval. With the setting off, the marks are recorded and the next interval starts automatically.

For **Momentary time sampling**, wait for **At this moment**. Select the behaviors happening at that moment, leave the others unselected, then select **Continue**. Use what you saw at the sampling moment, even if the behavior changes while you enter the marks.

For peer comparison, check whether the current interval is for the student or peer before marking behaviors. If you missed an interval or sample, clear its score on the computer so it is left out of the results.

See [Interval Recording](/interval-recording) for measurement rules and corrections.

### Other methods

| Method | What to do on iPhone |
| - | - |
| [Frequency](/frequency-recording) | Tap each time a behavior occurs. Each tap adds one event. With peer comparison, use the **Student** or **Peer** control for the person observed. **Undo** removes the latest Companion event; check the desktop count afterward. |
| [Duration](/duration-recording) | Tap when the episode starts, then tap again when it ends. The card shows the running time; completed episodes appear under **Session record**. |
| [Latency](/latency-recording) | Select **Present stimulus** when you give the prompt. Tap the behavior when the response occurs, or select **No response** when the trial ends without one. |
| [ABC](/abc-recording) | Select **Record event**, choose the antecedent, then **Continue to Behavior**. Choose the behavior, then **Continue to Consequence**. Choose the consequence and select **Save event**. Saving without a consequence leaves a draft to complete later. |
| [Anecdotal](/anecdotal-recording) | Use [Voice notes](/companion/voice-notes) for spoken notes. Type and edit the narrative on your computer. |

Use the computer for **Pause**, **Resume**, and earlier corrections. At an interval check or MTS prompt, select **Continue** instead. The linked method guides explain how pauses and ending affect an active episode, trial, or unfinished interval.

If the timer stops when you switch desktop windows, check **Pause when Sightline loses focus** in settings. For activity changes, use the desktop [Activity bar](/activity-context).

### Add a voice note

Follow [Voice notes](/companion/voice-notes) to prepare transcription and record. Keep the devices connected until transfer and processing finish, then check the text on your computer before ending. **Sending…** does not confirm that the note reached the desktop record.

## If the connection drops

Return to the computer and check the timer and recorded scores. Continue with its controls, or pause there while reconnecting.

Keep both apps open, check Bluetooth, and bring the devices together. Before scoring on iPhone again, check that it shows the same observation and current interval or episode. Check existing scores before repeating a tap: an interval tap can reverse a mark, and a Frequency tap adds another event.

The session still requires the computer; a lost connection does not make it an away observation. See [Companion troubleshooting](/companion/troubleshooting) if the problem continues.

## End and save on your computer

1. Select **End** on the computer and follow the method's confirmation. A fixed-length observation may already have finished.
2. Complete any remaining step, such as resolving a Latency trial or reviewing ABC tags, to reach **Session complete**.
3. Add final context and select **Review later**. Wait for saving to finish. If **Retry save** appears, keep the screen open and retry. If it still fails, [contact support](/companion/troubleshooting#contact-support) before closing.
4. Open the observation in the student's **Sessions** on the computer. Check the timing, scores or entries, and any voice-note text.

Opening the saved observation confirms the save. The phone returning home does not. See [Recording a Session](/recording#end-and-save-the-observation) for the method-specific completion steps.
