# Work on a student’s FBA

> Define targets, review ABC observation evidence, and write your account.

Use the **FBA Workspace** to bring together a student's ABC observation evidence for a functional behavior assessment. Define the target behaviors, choose observations to review, and write about the evidence. The write-up stays with the student as the assessment develops.

Open the student and select **FBA Workspace** in the sidebar. The write-up requires Pro or an active Pro trial.

## 1. Define the targets

Under **Target behaviors**, select **Add behavior**. Choose a library definition, or select **Write your own**, enter a **Behavior name** and **Operational definition**, and select **Add to case**.

Select a target's row to edit its name or definition, then **Save**. These edits belong to this student. **Remove from case** stops treating the behavior as a target after confirmation; its definition remains available to add again.

The **Sessions** and **Events** columns count observations and events that include each target. A dash means the available ABC records do not show that behavior occurring. Consider when and where the observations took place; a dash does not establish that the behavior never occurs.

For a behavior listed under **Also observed, not a target**, select **Make target** to add it to the case.

## 2. Collect and select observations

Select **Record observation** under **Direct observation** to start an ABC observation with the case's targets filled in. Review the setup before recording. See [ABC recording](/abc-recording) for the recording steps.

**New observations start with** shows this student's activity and ABC tag sets. Select a set to change it. To edit its contents, use **Manage activity sets…** or **Manage ABC tag sets…** at the bottom of the menu; see [Library](/library).

Saved ABC observations appear under Direct observation with dates and event counts. **View in Sessions** opens the student's session list for inspecting individual results.

To open a new write-up, you need at least one saved ABC observation. Select **Open write-up** at the top. The document opens on the left and **Evidence** on the right.

Choose which observations to include:

1. Select the session count at the top of Evidence, such as **3 of 5 sessions**.
2. Check the observations in **Select Sessions**.
3. Select **Apply**.

Check the selection each time you return. It controls the evidence shown and summarized. Changing it does not create a separate write-up or remove text already in the document.

## 3. Review the evidence

Select a behavior in Evidence to review its definition, **ABC Entries**, recorded pathways, and **Function Hypothesis**. Read any notice that a target has no evidence in the selected sessions. Open **Your session notes** below the document to consult your notes.

Function Hypothesis summarizes categorized consequences from the selected observations. Review the actual entries and their context before using it. An observed sequence can inform a hypothesis; it does not establish why a behavior occurred. The most frequently coded function is not necessarily the function maintaining the behavior.

If you need to change the proposed function or correct coding, use the [function and coding controls](#optional-adjust-function-evidence) described below.

## 4. Write, save, and export

Click in the document to write or paste your account. Use the toolbar for headings, emphasis, lists, and tables. Drag the divider to give the document or evidence more room.

Sightline saves automatically. Wait for **Saved** beside the student's name before selecting **Back**. Reopen **Open write-up** to continue.

If you see **Save failed**, keep the workspace open and use **Export → Copy Plain** to preserve your text elsewhere before leaving.

Use **Export → Copy Formatted** to paste the document into Word or Google Docs, or **Copy Plain** for unformatted text. To save a PDF or Word file:

1. Select **Export → Export document…** and choose **PDF** or **Word**.
2. Choose any supporting tables and charts.
3. Check the preview, then select **Export** and choose where to save the file.

The exported heading is **Functional Behavior Assessment**. Supporting figures use the selected ABC observations. Tables appear after the prose, and layout may differ from the editor. The preview is a PDF even for Word; check the saved Word file before sharing it.

## Optional: insert supporting material

Place the cursor where you want the material, then select **Insert into draft** on an evidence card:

* **Behavior Definition** inserts the definition.
* **ABC Entries** inserts an event table.
* **Function Hypothesis** inserts proposed hypothesis text. Read the message above its button: an insert can include several behaviors even when you are viewing one behavior's evidence.

**Show sources** displays the source references carried by the document. Use them alongside Evidence to check your account.

After a change to session selection or function evidence, an earlier insert may be marked **Evidence changed**. The **Review** control above the document helps you find the affected section.

In the **Evidence changed** menu, **Replace original** replaces the inserted section, including your edits. Choose **Insert fresh at cursor** to keep it and compare versions.

Review your own paragraphs too. The notices do not check every statement, and excluding an observation does not remove text about it.

## Optional: adjust function evidence

When enough categorized evidence is available, select the function heading to see event counts for each function. You can choose a different function based on your assessment. Sightline shows your selection alongside the function with the highest count; **Use majority** clears your selection.

**Opening built from** chooses whether the proposed statement opens with **Setting**, **Activity**, or neither (**None**). Activity is available only when the observations support it; the panel explains when it cannot be used.

To correct an entry's coding, select its function label and choose a category. The counts update. **Apply to … more entries** changes additional entries; check which ones it will affect first. Use **Manage coding** in ABC Entries to review or undo coding changes.

## Optional: draft session accounts with AI

After [AI setup](/ai-setup), **Write up sessions** drafts accounts from the selected observations. It adds accounts for selected sessions that do not already have an inserted write-up.

Read each account against its observation before keeping it. You can edit the text after generation finishes.
