# Keyboard shortcuts

> Find shortcuts for recording, notes, Results, and write-ups, and check where each one works.

Use this reference for desktop recording, Results, and write-up controls. **Command** means the Command key on Mac; use **Ctrl** for the same shortcuts on Windows. **Option** on Mac corresponds to **Alt** on Windows.

Close the shortcuts or behavior-definitions overlay before using a recording key.

## Before using recording keys

Click outside a text field before using a single letter, number, or Space to control recording. In a text field, those keys enter text. **Command/Ctrl+Z** also stays with text editing when the cursor is in a text field; it does not undo a recorded event there.

**Command/Ctrl+E** and **Command/Ctrl+/** can still act while your cursor is in a text field. Use the exact key combination listed for the action. Press and release a scoring key for each score.

Open **Keyboard Shortcuts** with **Command/Ctrl+/** in Setup, a recorder, or Results. The recorder's list shows controls for that screen; check the exceptions below before using them. **Settings → About → Keyboard shortcuts** is a general list and includes controls that are unavailable on some screens.

## Setup and app text size

| Action | Shortcut | Context |
| - | - | - |
| Begin an observation | **Command/Ctrl+Enter** | Setup, when the configuration is ready. In ABC, this works on the final Consequences step. |
| Save template changes | **Command/Ctrl+Enter** | When editing a template in Setup. |
| Increase text size | **Command/Ctrl+=** or **Command/Ctrl++** | App text zoom. |
| Decrease text size | **Command/Ctrl+-** | App text zoom. |
| Reset text size | **Command/Ctrl+0** | Returns app text zoom to 100%. |

## Shared recording controls

These controls apply to Interval, Frequency, Duration, Latency, ABC, and Anecdotal recording, with the limits shown below.

| Action | Shortcut | Limit |
| - | - | - |
| Start, pause, or resume | **Space** | Outside text fields and scoring switches. At an interval check or MTS prompt, Space continues to the next interval. A running Latency trial must be completed or canceled before pausing. |
| End the observation | **Command/Ctrl+E** | Opens the applicable end-session flow; follow the confirmation shown. |
| Show shortcuts | **Command/Ctrl+/** | Available on Duration and Latency as well as the other recorders. |
| Show behavior definitions | **?** | On a US keyboard, Shift+/. Outside text fields. |
| Toggle Zen mode | **Command/Ctrl+Shift+F** | Changes the recording layout. |

### Notes and undo

| Action | Shortcut | Where it applies |
| - | - | - |
| Open a new observation note | **N** | Interval, Frequency, and Duration. In ABC, use it when no ABC entry form is open. |
| Undo the latest recording action | **Command/Ctrl+Z** | Interval, Frequency, Duration, Latency, and ABC, outside text fields. The action undone depends on the method. |
| Redo the latest recording undo | **Command/Ctrl+Shift+Z** | Interval and Frequency only, outside text fields. |

In Interval or Frequency, a behavior assigned **N** takes priority over the note shortcut. Use **Notes → New note** instead. In Latency, **N** belongs to **No response**, even though the note button and shortcuts list also show N. Use **Notes → New note** for a note in Latency.

Anecdotal uses its entry field for notes. N does not open a note, and the recorder has no shortcut for undoing or redoing a saved entry. The normal undo shortcut still undoes typing in the entry field.

## Interval and Frequency scoring

| Action | Shortcut |
| - | - |
| Score a behavior | Its displayed key, usually **1–9** |
| Record a Frequency peer event, with Peer comparison enabled | **Option** on Mac or **Alt** on Windows, plus the behavior's key |
| Return from a selected earlier interval to the current interval | **Escape** |
| Confirm interval scores or finish an MTS prompt | **Enter** or **Space**, outside text fields and scoring switches |

Interval keys mark the current interval, including before the pause for Partial and Whole Interval. MTS keys score only at the sampling prompt. Frequency keys add individual events. For method-specific scoring and corrections, see [Interval Recording](/interval-recording) and [Frequency Recording](/frequency-recording).

### Changing behavior keys

In Setup, edit the **Key** field beside a behavior. Leave it empty to use the displayed default. Check the displayed assignments after changing or reordering behaviors.

Custom behavior keys apply to Interval and Frequency. Duration, Latency, and the ABC behavior column use their numbered positions even if Setup contains a custom key.

You cannot assign **E**, Space, or **/** as behavior keys. If you enter one of these keys or reuse a key assigned to another behavior, Sightline assigns a different key. Check the key displayed in the recorder before using it.

Choose a different letter or number for each behavior. Avoid **N** if you want to use it to open a note.

## Duration and Latency scoring

| Method | Action | Shortcut |
| - | - | - |
| Duration | Start or stop timing a behavior | Its position, **1–9**, while the observation is running |
| Latency | Mark the prompt and start a trial | **Enter**, while running with no active trial |
| Latency | Record the response and complete the trial | The response behavior's position, **1–9** |
| Latency | Complete the active trial as No response | **N** |
| Latency | Cancel the active trial | **Escape** |

In Latency, N does nothing when no trial is active; it does not switch to opening a note. Undo removes the most recently completed trial rather than reopening its timer. See [Duration Recording](/duration-recording) and [Latency Recording](/latency-recording).

## ABC event entry

| Action | Shortcut | Context |
| - | - | - |
| Start a new event | **E** | No event form open; outside a text field. |
| Start an event carrying over the last event's antecedent and consequence | **Shift+E** | No event form open and at least one event recorded. Review the carried-over information and choose the behavior. |
| Move to the next or previous column | **Tab** / **Shift+Tab** | While an event form is open; stops at the first or last column. |
| Toggle an antecedent or consequence tag | Its displayed number, **1–8** | That column is active and no text field is focused. |
| Open **Search all tags** | **9** | Antecedent or Consequence column active and no text field focused. |
| Select a behavior | Its displayed number, **1–9** | Behavior column active and no text field focused. |
| Advance, or add the event from Consequence | **Enter** | Also works inside event detail fields. |
| Add the event from any column | **Command/Ctrl+Enter** | A behavior must be selected. |

While **Search all tags** is open, **Enter**, **Tab**, **Esc**, and number keys act on the search menu rather than the event form. Use the arrow keys to move through the list and **Enter** to select a tag. **Esc** closes the search menu and leaves the event form open.

Enter advances or submits the ABC form; it does not insert a line break in its detail fields. Use the form's **Cancel** button to cancel an unfinished entry. Escape does not cancel the event form. See [ABC Recording](/abc-recording).

When switching between ABC entry and notes, finish or cancel the event with its form controls, then select **Notes → New note**.

## Anecdotal entries and structured observation notes

With the cursor in the Anecdotal entry field:

| Action | Shortcut |
| - | - |
| Add an entry to **Observation log** | **Enter** |
| Save the log draft to **General notes** | **Command/Ctrl+Enter** |
| Add a line break | **Shift+Enter** |
| Accept a visible quick-phrase completion | **Tab** |

An **Observation log** entry uses the elapsed time from when you started typing. Saving to **General notes** adds no time. A tag suggestion menu takes priority over submission, so select or dismiss its suggestion before submitting the entry.

In a structured recorder's **New note** field, Enter adds the note, Shift+Enter adds a line break, and Tab accepts a visible phrase completion. **Escape discards the unfinished note.** See [Anecdotal Recording](/anecdotal-recording) and [Hashtags and Quick Phrases](/hashtags-and-quick-phrases).

## Activity selection

When **Track activities** is enabled, press **Shift** plus a top-row number to select the activity in that position. Follow the displayed order of the observation's activity set. Press the same shortcut again to clear that activity; the **Other** slot opens its label picker.

The General set is:

| Shortcut | Activity |
| - | - |
| **Shift+1** | Large group instruction |
| **Shift+2** | Small group work |
| **Shift+3** | Independent work |
| **Shift+4** | Free choice |
| **Shift+5** | Unstructured time |
| **Shift+6** | Transition |
| **Shift+7** | Other |

Other sets have different labels and positions. Activity shortcuts work outside text fields and selectors in all desktop recording methods that show activity tracking. Use the top number row, not the numeric keypad. See [Activity Context](/activity-context).

## Results

| Action | Shortcut |
| - | - |
| Open the document export workspace | **Command/Ctrl+P** |
| Export CSV | **Command/Ctrl+Shift+C** |
| Start a new observation | **Command/Ctrl+N** |
| Show shortcuts | **Command/Ctrl+/** |

The export shortcut has the same plan requirements and available content as the Export button. **Command/Ctrl+P** opens the export controls; it does not immediately save a PDF. The Results shortcuts above are unavailable while the export workspace is open. See [Results](/results).

## Write-up workspaces

| Action | Shortcut | Context |
| - | - | - |
| Find text in the draft | **Command/Ctrl+F** | Observation or FBA write-up editor. |
| Request a transition suggestion | **Command/Ctrl+Shift+T** | While editing a draft, with local AI enabled and no other AI operation or review pending. Do not use on a Final write-up. |
| Accept a pending refinement | **Enter** | When focus is outside the editor and other text fields. You can also select **Accept**; use **Reject** to discard the proposal. |
| Toggle the Notes drawer | **Command/Ctrl+Shift+N** | FBA write-up only. |

Escape does not reject a pending refinement. Use the visible **Accept** or **Reject** control. In the observation workspace, allow saving to finish and select **Back**. If saving fails, keep the workspace open and preserve a separate text copy. See [Write up an observation](/writeup-workspace) or [FBA Workspace](/fba-workspace) for the saving steps for that workspace.

Do not use the transition shortcut on a write-up marked **Final**. It can still offer a suggestion and allow you to accept it while the editor appears locked. Return the write-up to **Draft** before requesting a suggestion, and review the proposed text before accepting it.
