# Use AI while writing

> Review AI suggestions for selected text or draft prose from the observation record.

Sightline's AI tools can help revise a passage or draft prose from supported observation data. The writing runs on your computer and requires Pro, including an active Pro trial, and completed [AI setup](/ai-setup).

Start with a reviewed observation record. AI-generated wording is still a draft: check it against the measurements and notes before using it in your report.

| What you want to change | Action | Scope |
| - | - | - |
| A selected passage | Select text, then **Rewrite**, **Tighten**, or **Neutralize**. | Review the proposal and choose **Accept** or **Reject**. |
| A blank Interval, ABC, or Frequency write-up | **Draft summary** on the blank page. | Inserts a draft from the session data. |
| An existing Interval, ABC, or Frequency write-up | **Refine → Re-draft** in the main toolbar. | Replaces the document body after confirmation. |
| An Anecdotal write-up | **Generate draft**, then review and confirm it in Results. | Inserts a reviewed draft into a blank write-up. Replacing existing text also requires replacement confirmation. |

## Revise a passage

Open the observation's **Write-up** and make sure its status is **Draft**. If it is Final, select **Draft** to reopen editing. Write or paste the passage you want to work on, then select the text to see its AI actions:

* **Rewrite** rephrases the selection.
* **Tighten** makes it more concise.
* **Neutralize** helps revise the wording toward an objective description.

After choosing an action, compare the original and proposed text in **Review refinement**. Select **Accept** to replace the passage, or **Reject** to keep your wording. You can continue editing an accepted revision yourself.

Read for meaning as well as style. Check that the revision preserves who did what, the level of support provided, the order of events, and any qualifications in the original. A shorter sentence is not an improvement if it changes the observation.

## Draft from observation data

For Interval, ABC, and Frequency observations, a blank write-up offers **Draft summary**. If the document already contains text, select **Refine**, read the replacement message, then choose **Re-draft**. The document must be in **Draft**.

<Warning>
  **Re-draft** replaces the current document body. Copy any wording you want to keep before proceeding.
</Warning>

Leave the document open without editing it while generation runs.

The full-document action differs from the actions beside a text selection. To revise only a passage, select it and choose **Rewrite**, **Tighten**, or **Neutralize**.

For Duration and Latency observations, write the account manually from the results, then use the passage tools as needed. Drafting a whole account from those methods' data is not currently available.

### Draft an Anecdotal account

Anecdotal AI drafting requires at least two observation entries containing at least 60 words in total. Context and other session notes do not count toward this minimum.

1. On a blank write-up, select **Generate draft**. If the document already contains text, select **Generate draft for review…**, read the message, then select **Generate draft**. Generation does not change your document.
2. Review the proposed draft in Results beside the editor. Compare it with the original observation entries. Review any **Draft checks** shown and expand **Sources**, when available, to inspect the supporting information.
3. Select **I reviewed this draft against my observation record and confirm that it is accurate** once you have completed that review.
4. Return to the document and select **Insert reviewed draft**. To replace existing text, select **Replace with reviewed draft…**, then confirm **Replace draft**.

If a generated draft is already waiting, the button says **Review draft in Results**. Select it and continue from step 2.

## Review the draft against the results

Keep the results open beside the document while reading. Check quantities against the displayed measurement, especially percentages from interval recording. A partial-interval percentage describes scored intervals, not the percentage of time a behavior lasted.

Check descriptions of activities against what was actually recorded. Being present for a task does not establish participation or completion. Similarly, an ABC sequence can describe what preceded and followed a behavior without establishing its function.

Keep direct quotations distinct from paraphrases, and remove conclusions that are not supported by the observation. Add your interpretation where needed in your own words.

## Work from corrected data

If you edit the results while the Write-Up Workspace is open, finish those changes before generating again. AI drafting uses the current Results entries.

Changing a score, entry, or activity label does not update an existing draft. If Sightline says **Data changed since this summary was generated**, select **Regenerate**.

For Anecdotal, repeat the review against the corrected entries and confirm the new draft before inserting it. Text already inserted into the write-up also needs to be checked; it does not update automatically.

## If AI is unavailable

Use **Settings → AI Assistant** to check that AI is on and the writing model is installed. Follow [Set up AI](/ai-setup) if you have not downloaded it yet. If the local engine has stopped, use **Restart** (or **Start**) on the **AI couldn’t start** card and try again.

You can continue writing manually while AI is unavailable. A sample write-up in demo mode is a prepared example, so opening it does not confirm that your computer can generate a draft.

When the writing is ready, follow [Write up an observation](/writeup-workspace) to mark it Final, copy it, or export a document.
