Choose how you will record before starting. iPhone can send scores to a nearby computer, or record an observation that you prepared on the computer and sent to the phone before leaving. Both options require compatible app versions and Pro or an active Pro trial on the computer. See Overview and requirements before setup.

Recording methods

The table shows which device to use for each method. “Pause on” means Pause to score each interval is enabled. For Partial and Whole Interval, you can score while observing either way; the pause adds a check before Continue. See Record with your computer nearby for device-specific controls. The away walkthrough demonstrates Partial Interval with the pause off; its tap instructions do not apply to Whole Interval or MTS.

Interval scoring and timing

With Partial Interval and Pause to score each interval off, Sightline records ✕ for any behavior you leave unchanged. If you miss an interval, clear its score in Results after saving or returning the observation. Partial-interval percentages show the share of scored intervals marked ✓, not how long the behavior lasted. For Partial or Whole Interval with the pause on, the phone keeps the same scoring cards available during the interval and at the pause. Check the scores before selecting Continue; you do not need to enter them again. For nearby MTS on iPhone, Continue records unselected behaviors as ✕. If you missed the sample, clear it on the computer after continuing. See Interval Recording for measurement guidance. For nearby Frequency peer comparison, use the Student or Peer control for the person observed. Interval peer comparison uses the current target or peer interval shown by the observation.

Starting, pausing, correcting, and ending

Only one away observation can run on iPhone at a time. Begin and end it on iPhone. With No limit in the partial-interval example, ending during an interval leaves that unfinished interval out of the saved record. Prepare activity choices on the computer. See Activity Context.

Voice notes

Voice notes are limited to 20 seconds per clip. iPhone uses Hold to record. The computer needs its transcription model to turn clips into text. Nearby clips transfer during the session; away clips are processed after return. A saved observation can still contain a failed transcription, so check the text separately from the scores. See Voice notes for microphone setup, model preparation, and retry instructions.

Connections and stored observations

Nearby recording needs the phone connected to the computer; a lost connection does not switch the observation into away mode. Check the active observation when returning from another app or waking a device. After an away session, Ready to send to your computer means the observation is waiting to transfer. Keep it on the phone until you can open and check the saved record on the computer. If it has not transferred, follow the troubleshooting steps before forgetting a device, changing pairing, deleting the observation, or reinstalling. Follow Companion troubleshooting for a connection problem, interrupted observation, or return that needs attention.
