Interval recording records whether a behavior occurred in each of a series of equal intervals.
1

Set up

Set up an observation and choose the method. Name and define each behavior, and check the key beside it. Set Length in minutes and Interval in seconds, or choose No limit. For Partial and Whole Interval, Pause to score each interval is on by default: the clock stops after each interval so you can check your marks. Turn it off to let intervals run on.
2

Score each interval

Each behavior has a ✓/✕ control. Select ✓ or ✕, or press the behavior’s key to switch between them.
Partial Interval recorder for Sam Sample at interval 1 of 60, with Off-task marked ✓ and Continue in the bottom bar.

Pause to score each interval is on, so the clock stops at the end of the interval. Shown in demo mode.

Partial or Whole Interval: watch throughout the interval and mark what you see. With pausing on, select Continue to record the marks and start the next interval.Momentary Time Sampling: the controls become available when the interval ends, and the clock stops. Mark what was happening at that moment, then select Continue.
3

End and save

At the set length, the observation ends on its own, or waits for Continue if the clock is stopped at an interval. To end early, or to end a No limit observation, select End and confirm. Add any final context, then save.Ending a No limit observation drops the unfinished interval. Ending a fixed-length observation early keeps any scores already in the unfinished interval, so check the last interval before you read the percentage.

Where your data appears

In Results, the Summary card shows the percentage of scored intervals marked ✓, with how many were scored, such as “8 of 20 scored”. Interval Record shows each score across the observation. How the percentage is calculated

Good to know

Untouched means a score. When an interval is recorded, a behavior you didn’t touch counts as ✕ for Partial Interval and MTS, and ✓ for Whole Interval. Missed an interval? Select its cell in the behavior’s row and choose Clear score, so it is left out instead of counted. For MTS, select Continue first. In Whole Interval, clear any interval you looked away during. After saving, see Fix a mistake. Observing a peer. When the heading changes to Comparison peer, score that person instead. See Record a peer comparison. Which length to report. Session complete and the minutes at the top of Results show the time from start to end, pauses included, so with pausing on they run longer than the set length. Results calculates from the recorded intervals: report the number of intervals times the interval length. Made a mistake? Outside a text field, press ⌘Z or Ctrl+Z to undo the last score in the current interval.
