Use this reference for desktop recording, Results, and write-up controls. Command means the Command key on Mac; use Ctrl for the same shortcuts on Windows. Option on Mac corresponds to Alt on Windows. Close the shortcuts or behavior-definitions overlay before using a recording key.

Before using recording keys

Click outside a text field before using a single letter, number, or Space to control recording. In a text field, those keys enter text. Command/Ctrl+Z also stays with text editing when the cursor is in a text field; it does not undo a recorded event there. Command/Ctrl+E and Command/Ctrl+/ can still act while your cursor is in a text field. Use the exact key combination listed for the action. Press and release a scoring key for each score. Open Keyboard Shortcuts with Command/Ctrl+/ in Setup, a recorder, or Results. The recorder’s list shows controls for that screen; check the exceptions below before using them. Settings → About → Keyboard shortcuts is a general list and includes controls that are unavailable on some screens.

Setup and app text size

Shared recording controls

These controls apply to Interval, Frequency, Duration, Latency, ABC, and Anecdotal recording, with the limits shown below.

Notes and undo

In Interval or Frequency, a behavior assigned N takes priority over the note shortcut. Use Notes → New note instead. In Latency, N belongs to No response, even though the note button and shortcuts list also show N. Use Notes → New note for a note in Latency. Anecdotal uses its entry field for notes. N does not open a note, and the recorder has no shortcut for undoing or redoing a saved entry. The normal undo shortcut still undoes typing in the entry field.

Interval and Frequency scoring

Interval keys mark the current interval, including before the pause for Partial and Whole Interval. MTS keys score only at the sampling prompt. Frequency keys add individual events. For method-specific scoring and corrections, see Interval Recording and Frequency Recording.

Changing behavior keys

In Setup, edit the Key field beside a behavior. Leave it empty to use the displayed default. Check the displayed assignments after changing or reordering behaviors. Custom behavior keys apply to Interval and Frequency. Duration, Latency, and the ABC behavior column use their numbered positions even if Setup contains a custom key. You cannot assign E, Space, or / as behavior keys. If you enter one of these keys or reuse a key assigned to another behavior, Sightline assigns a different key. Check the key displayed in the recorder before using it. Choose a different letter or number for each behavior. Avoid N if you want to use it to open a note.

Duration and Latency scoring

In Latency, N does nothing when no trial is active; it does not switch to opening a note. Undo removes the most recently completed trial rather than reopening its timer. See Duration Recording and Latency Recording.

ABC event entry

While Search all tags is open, Enter, Tab, Esc, and number keys act on the search menu rather than the event form. Use the arrow keys to move through the list and Enter to select a tag. Esc closes the search menu and leaves the event form open. Enter advances or submits the ABC form; it does not insert a line break in its detail fields. Use the form’s Cancel button to cancel an unfinished entry. Escape does not cancel the event form. See ABC Recording. When switching between ABC entry and notes, finish or cancel the event with its form controls, then select Notes → New note.

Anecdotal entries and structured observation notes

With the cursor in the Anecdotal entry field: An Observation log entry uses the elapsed time from when you started typing. Saving to General notes adds no time. A tag suggestion menu takes priority over submission, so select or dismiss its suggestion before submitting the entry. In a structured recorder’s New note field, Enter adds the note, Shift+Enter adds a line break, and Tab accepts a visible phrase completion. Escape discards the unfinished note. See Anecdotal Recording and Hashtags and Quick Phrases.

Activity selection

When Track activities is enabled, press Shift plus a top-row number to select the activity in that position. Follow the displayed order of the observation’s activity set. Press the same shortcut again to clear that activity; the Other slot opens its label picker. The General set is: Other sets have different labels and positions. Activity shortcuts work outside text fields and selectors in all desktop recording methods that show activity tracking. Use the top number row, not the numeric keypad. See Activity Context.

Results

The export shortcut has the same plan requirements and available content as the Export button. Command/Ctrl+P opens the export controls; it does not immediately save a PDF. The Results shortcuts above are unavailable while the export workspace is open. See Results.

Write-up workspaces

Escape does not reject a pending refinement. Use the visible Accept or Reject control. In the observation workspace, allow saving to finish and select Back. If saving fails, keep the workspace open and preserve a separate text copy. See Write up an observation or FBA Workspace for the saving steps for that workspace. Do not use the transition shortcut on a write-up marked Final. It can still offer a suggestion and allow you to accept it while the editor appears locked. Return the write-up to Draft before requesting a suggestion, and review the proposed text before accepting it.
