Sightline runs on Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit. The installer is named Sightline_<version>_x64-setup.exe.

Install

Run the installer and follow its steps. It installs Sightline for your Windows user account only, by default in %LOCALAPPDATA%\Sightline, so it does not ask for administrator rights. Sightline installs its own updates the same way. Sightline needs the Microsoft Edge WebView2 Runtime, which Windows 11 and most Windows 10 computers already have. If it is missing, the installer downloads and installs it, so keep the computer online during installation. If your computer is managed by a school or district, IT may need to approve or deploy Sightline for you. For a guide written for IT departments, email support@sightlinebehavior.com.

If Windows says it protected your PC

Microsoft Defender SmartScreen can stop an installer it has not seen often, even when the installer is signed. If you see Windows protected your PC:
  1. Select More info.
  2. Check that Publisher reads Christopher Ives. That is the name on Sightline’s code-signing certificate. If it shows a different name or Unknown publisher, do not run the file; download it again from sightlinebehavior.com/download.
  3. Select Run anyway.
Your browser may also show a similar warning when the download finishes. In Microsoft Edge, open the download’s menu and select Keep. If Edge asks again, select Show more, then Keep anyway.

If Microsoft Defender quarantines a file

If Defender removes a Sightline file, the app may fail to start, or AI or voice features may stop working.
  1. Open Windows Security → Virus & threat protection → Protection history.
  2. Select the entry that names a file in the Sightline install folder (by default %LOCALAPPDATA%\Sightline), and check the file name.
  3. Select Actions → Restore.
  4. Restart Sightline. If the file is still missing, run the installer again.
On a managed computer, you may not be able to restore the file yourself. Ask your IT department, and email support@sightlinebehavior.com with the file name and the threat name Defender shows.

Where your data is stored

Sightline keeps its database, its local backups, downloaded AI and voice models, recorded audio, and license files in:
To open it, paste that path into the File Explorer address bar. This folder stays on this computer. Windows does not copy Local AppData to other computers with a roaming profile, so it is not a backup. To keep a copy somewhere else, use Back up to a file. Sightline will not save a backup or an Export records file inside this folder, and shows “That folder is where Sightline keeps its own records and backups. Choose a different folder.” if you try.

Find the log files

Sightline’s log files are in the logs folder inside the data folder:
If support asks for logs, attach the files from that folder to your email.

Uninstall

  1. If you will not use Sightline on this computer again, open Settings → Plan and select Deauthorize first, so your license can be activated on another computer. See Licensing.
  2. Open Windows Settings → Apps → Installed apps (on Windows 10, Apps & features), find Sightline, and select Uninstall. The publisher listed there is Ethoseen LLC, the company that makes Sightline.
  3. In the uninstaller, choose whether to tick Delete the application data. It is not ticked by default.
  4. Select Uninstall.
If you leave Delete the application data unticked, the uninstaller removes only the app. Your records stay in %LOCALAPPDATA%\com.sightline.app, and reinstalling Sightline picks them up again.
Delete the application data permanently deletes the whole data folder: your database with every student and observation, the backups Sightline kept on this computer (Automatic backups and Back up now), downloaded AI and voice models, recorded audio, license files, and logs. Save a backup to a file in another folder first if you may need these records again.
The uninstaller never deletes backups you saved to a folder you chose, or files you exported. Sightline also stores its database key, your license key and, if you paired a phone, the Companion pairing key in Windows Credential Manager. The uninstaller does not remove these, with or without Delete the application data. To remove them, open Credential Manager → Windows Credentials and remove the entries ending in com.sightline.app or Sightline Companion. Remove them only after the data folder is gone: without the database key, Sightline cannot open the records in it.
